Figma Group Buy
at ₹199/month

A Figma group buy is a subscription deal made between two or more designers or team members that allows them to access Figma's paid features at a lower price per user. Group purchasing cuts costs, opens up collaboration opportunities and makes professional design software accessible to larger teams.

While contemporary teams can't do without design tools, the subscription price can add up quickly. For freelancers, small studios, and startup design teams, new individual Figma plans can sometimes be hard to afford, particularly if there's a high price to be paid for each of these tools and platforms.

This is where the Figma group buy comes into play. Teams can benefit from all of Figma's features without having to pay per person for all the designers. In addition to the savings, group purchasing allows for shared libraries, a consistent color scheme and collaboration that isn't as well supported by an individual purchasing plan.

This post takes a closer look at how Figma groups purchase work, the features to utilize, the best way to set up the purchase correctly, and how to get the most out of your purchase without running into compliance or access management hassle.

What is a Figma Group Buy and How Does it Work?

A Figma group buy is a subscription arrangement that allows for a team, organization or group of collaborating designers to share or pool their subscription to Figma's Professional or Organization plans. The designers do not have to pay individually, but the cost is spread out among all the members.

What's the difference between individual pricing and group pricing?

Figma's pricing is based on how many editors are on a team plan. The Professional plan has a per editor, per month fee, so costs escalate by an editor's cost per month. Group purchasing, especially set-ups based on such options as a 199rs month-to-month subscription, can save each designer a significant amount when organized correctly.

To give you a sense of scale, if someone is a solo designer and pays full price for a Professional plan they are sharing the total cost. This reduces each person's cost to a much more sustainable level with a group of 5 sharing the same level of access, which is more viable for smaller studios or freelance collectives.

Who can be part of a Figma Group Buy?

Group purchases are suitable for:

• Regularly working freelance collectives with joint clients.
• Small design agencies that have 2-10 designers.
• Multi-department design teams.
• Student groups or "bootcamp" groups developing portfolios collaboratively.

Teams of at least two editors are the minimum to see meaningful cost benefits. These savings are multiplied for larger groups.

Some of the most important features in Figma that you should use during a group buy.

The idea of using a Figma group buy is not just about gaining access to the tool; it's about leveraging its capabilities to their maximum potential.

What are the benefits of using Figma Group Color Styles for design consistency?

Teams can create a library of named groups of colors with Figma group color styles. For this reason, a team can establish groups of colors as Brand/Primary, Brand/Secondary and UI/Neutral, and ensure uniformity across each designer's design.

If various team members use the same group color styles, design inconsistencies become significantly greater. No more "guesstimates" on which is the "official" brand blue—it is clear, shared and available to all team members.

What's the point of organizing frames into groups in Figma?

Using Figma group frames allows designers to nest and organize components within a file in a logical manner, making more complex projects easier to navigate and collaborate on. If a team is working concurrently on a large product design, ungrouped frames soon turn into an unruly mess.

Well-designed frame grouping (by feature, user flow, or component type) helps to make files readable and helps cut down on the time it takes for new team members to get on board with a project in the middle.

What are the advantages of collaborating with shared libraries in Figma?

The shared libraries are one of the best features that Figma has to offer group buyers. One designer can have one master component library, publish that to the team and everyone else can add the latest components when they need them to their own file. Changes to components in the library are automatically updated throughout the library, ensuring that all projects remain in sync without needing to copy and paste.

This is enough to motivate most teams to sign up for a group subscription.

Figma Group Buy: Setting Up Step-by-Step

Step 1: Establish the structure of your group.

Make a distinction between Editor and Viewer access before buying. Full editing rights aren't necessary for all stakeholders, such as developers, clients, and project managers, for whom viewer access is free. The more restrictive the number of paid editor seats, the more controlled costs will be.

Step 2: Identify a Billing Owner.

Subscription/billing should be owned by one person. It helps to make payments easier and avoid lapsed accounts in the case of a missed payment from one team member. Set up a common payment system or a straight line-takes-line payment system among the group members and gather contributions ahead of time.

Step 3: Control Shared Access and Permissions

Admins can assign roles to every member in the team settings of Figma. Have a log of who can do what and regularly check permissions, particularly when people are leaving and project scope changes.

Step 4: Make sure that the conditions of use of Figma are respected

This is critical. Figma's terms of service do not allow users to share their logins with other users. A compliant group buy is when each editor has his/her own account and the team subscription is set up properly with Figma's official team or organization plan. Sharing credentials without permission is in breach of Figma's Terms, can lead to termination and may compromise the security of the team.

What to do to make your Figma Group Buy Investment Count.

To achieve brand consistency, you will use Figma Group Color Styles Across Projects.

Share a single up-to-date color style library with your team and use it in all your current projects. Define one person as the library owner who is responsible for updating the library, and make it explicit what changes are planned before publishing – particularly in the case of a long project, such as a colour change, that might impact dozens of screens.

Creating a Figma Group Frames Organically for Efficient Workflow.

Define naming rules at the start of the project. The uniformity of file names (e.g. [Feature]/[Screen Name]/[State]) makes files easily searchable and greatly shortens the time that collaborators spend searching for the correct screen.

The ROI Concept and Measurement of a Cost Saving per Designer.

To determine your per-designer cost, divide the total monthly subscription cost by the number of editors using the subscription. This is contrasted to the individual plan rate to measure the savings. Consider productivity benefits from libraries that can be shared and collaborative features to get a more complete view of ROI.

If you're on a 199rs/month plan, it's important to keep an eye on these numbers on a monthly basis to justify the group setup and to know when to grow and reorganize.

Common Challenges in Figma Group Buys—and How to Solve Them

How to access and secure a shared team account?

Create and use strong, unique passwords for each account, and turn on 2 factor authentication. Do quarterly access reviews to remove past collaborators. Do not share logon information, each editor should log on separately.

How to Edit Conflicts When Two or More People Edit at the Same Time?

Figma is good at multiplayer editing, but conflicts often occur when there is no communication between two designers editing the same component. This can be done with clear project ownership, assigning specific files or sections to specific designers, and using Figma's commenting feature to point out changes before implementing changes to shared components.

Who Manages Billing Disputes or Payment issues in a Group?

Make a cost sharing contract in writing, even if it's just a simple document stating how much each member is expected to pay, when they are expected to pay it, and what is expected if they do leave the group. This way, if the dispute arises, the team will not be hindered in accessing the project.

The question is how do teams stay up to date as Figma rolls out new features?

Subscribe to Figma's official release notes and changelog. Designate a member of the team to check for updates every month and inform other members of the team of relevant changes (particularly changes to the behaviour, permissions or pricing of shared libraries).

Is a Figma Group Buy for your team?

A carefully planned Figma group buy can save small design teams and freelance collectives money while providing the opportunity to leverage collaborative capabilities that save time and promote uniformity. Group colors for consistency of visual identity across projects. Figma group frames make it easier to manage the chaos in a file. Shared libraries prevent duplication of effort.

The secret is getting it right, with individual accounts, permissions defined, billing responsibilities defined, and 100% Figma TOA adherence.

First audit the cost of your current design subscription, then work out how many people are on your team, and model out the cost of the group plan for your team at the price point you want, e.g. the 199rs/month tier. Numbers can often speak for themselves.
